Another
classic Elmer Bernstein comes to CD with this release of his 1983
score to the 3-D production Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden
Zone. A powerful and adventurous score, this was Bernstein’s
valiant contribution to the post Star Wars science fiction craze.
Billed by executive producer Ivan Reitman (Stripes) as a “space
adventure with a sense of humor,” Spacehunter stars Peter
Strauss as Wolff, a wily salvage pilot and interstellar mercenary.
Lured into rescuing a trio of space maidens marooned on a faraway,
plague-ravaged planet, Wolff battles a wild assortment of monsters
and mutants with his adolescent tracker, Niki, played by Molly
Ringwald.
Bernstein’s score is a muscular work. Laden with martial
percussion and featuring a heroic main theme, the score is not
without one of the composer’s typically lovely themes, in
this case inspired by Ringwald’s character Niki, which is
treated to a variety of touching, delicate and soaring interpretations.
The score is an enormous amount of fun and has long been one of
the most requested works from one of the composer’s most
exciting creative periods. We are tremendously pleased to offer
this major Bernstein premiere.
